Malinga decided to retire from Tests

Shocking news for the cricket fans who like the Sri Lanka's creative pace bowler Lasith Malinga as he announced recently that he has decided to retire from Tests because of a "long-standing degenerative" knee injury however continue to play ODIs and Twenty20 games. The 27-year-old Malinga, popular for his slinging action and toe-crushing Yorkers is presently playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 4 and took 11 wickets from only four matches hence the top wicket taker in this season's IPL.

From the upcoming Test series against England, Malinga pulled out saying he has fitness problems with a knee injury. For enduring to play for Mumbai Indians in IPL the Sri Lanka cricket board transmit aspersions on him and Duleep Mendis (Sri Lanka's new chairman of selectors) stated that it seems little strange when somebody tells he is injured and carry on to play cricket. Though Malinga was not included in Sri Lanka's Test crew for the tour of England, the board asked Malinga to return home and go through a rehabilitation program if he could not play for the national team on account of injuries. It is explained by Malinga that the situation stops him from playing in only Test layout.

The pacer said he fears that playing Test may lead to everlasting injury and he wishes to represent Sri Lanka in the 2012 World Twenty20 and the 2015 World Cup and also as many ICC events as possible so he has taken this decision. Malinga has taken 101 wickets in 30 Test matches at an average of 33.15 since making his debut in 2004 against Australia in Darwin, whereas last year’s Colombo match in August against India is his last. In a Test innings he has thrice five-wicket hauls. In the ODIs he obtained more success by taking 127 wickets in 84 matches at an average of 26.38. For 16 months knee injury had kept him away from playing ODIs.

According to Malinga, now he has recognized that there is severe workload of Test cricket as the fast bowler has to bowl above 15 overs which could lead to everlasting injury. After a three-year absence last year he had tried to return for test cricket due to the requests from the team management and the selectors but it left him flabby tending brutal knee pain for 2 months. Since then the national team physiotherapist and his orthopedic consultant has warned him that his condition will worsen if he fields or bowls for longer time. Also Malinga told that after returning home he will discuss his future plans with the selectors.

  1. I am very sad to hear this.Malinga is a very eligible for taking wickets in test as well as in odis and t20s.So,the retirement of malinga will change the sri lankan test career.
