London Olympics is over and once again the cricket fever is back. Team India is ready to enter the stadium once again. The India versus New Zealand Test Series 2012 is set to start from 23 August. The team for the Test Series has already been selected. On August 10, the All-India Senior Selection Committee of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) met at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai to select the players of the test team. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been selected as the captain of the team. Yuvraj Singh, who has recently recovered from cancer, will not be playing in this Test series.
VVS Laxman, the classical batsman who played 134 Test matches and scored 8,781 runs with a strike rate of 45.97 has already retired from the shorter forms of the game. Some of the cricket experts felt that Laxman should be replaced with some other batsman while others believe that he should be kept for some more time, especially due to the eight successive Test defeats of the team abroad (4 in England and 4 in Australia). The main reason of these successive failures was the lack of good batting. Laxman was the worst performer among the mainline batsmen against Australia with just 155 runs in 8 innings. However, Laxman has been selected in the team looking at his good record on the Indian pitch. Rahul Dravid ‘The wall’ has also announced his Test retirement after the Australia tour, so there is a huge void in the middle order batting.
This time the batting line-up looks strong even without Dravid. Strong Batsmen including Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are being there to support the batting line. Ajinkya Rahane may play as the reserve opener. This line-up has been boosted with Cheteshwar Pujara, who is believed to be the next Rahul Dravid. On the bowling department, the left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma are present. On the spin side, Pragyan Ojha has been chosen to make the bowling line even better. The squad also includes Suresh Raina, Piyush Chawla and Virat Kohli.
