An attacking left-handed batsman and an athletic fielder, Suresh Raina is known for his ability to hit the stumps from the infield. He has charming personality as well as fine character in the Indian dressing room….is it so? Unfortunately in the recent times, Suresh Raina has become the point of focus in India due to his embarrassing tweets against Pakistan players on their exit from the World Twenty20 tournament and this badly embroiled him in a controversy.
After returning back to India (following the ouster from the ICC World T20), Raina tweeted on his micro-blogging page that he is happy being back after a long time and he was thrilled to join his IPL team for Champions League T20, which starts from Oct 13. Raina has been a crucial member of the Chennai team ever since the first edition of IPL, and this time his excitement was quite visible in his tweet:
"Back home after so many days.. Can't wait to Join The Chennai Super kings For CL.."
A couple of minutes later, Raina made another strongly-worded tweet which set the micro-blogging site abuzz:
"Ek do din late gaye ghar !!!! Woh bhi besharam ki tarah Gaye... Bye bye Pakistan!!!!" (Went home a day or two late!! But dishonourably … Bye Bye Pakistan).
This tweet was directed to the Pakistan cricket team, who were ousted from the tournament against Sri Lanka in the semi-final as they lost by 16 runs.
Both tweets were posted using Raina’s Twitter handle @ImRaina. It was assumed that Twitter users were quickly latched on to the post and the immediate feedback might have prompted Raina to delete the tweet. Still, smartness of Raina didn’t work as screenshots of the post swiftly made the rounds to those who had missed it.
It was really a debatable point whether Raina took some time to realize the mistake that he committed or he did so intentionally. But, things were totally different in reality; as Raina did remove the tweets hours later and surprisingly blamed his nephew who apparently had got hold of his smartphone.
However, the damage has already been done, on Friday, Raina did attempt some damage control by attributing the offensive tweet to his nephew and tweeted “Smart phones r dangerous. Discovered it last night after my nephew posted random tweets. I'm a sportsman and would never disrespect.”
Thus, @ImRaina posted this tweet in a bid to clarify and thereby made his so far invisible nephew an overnight sensation. Even, to support his deletion he wrote another tweet:
"Though I already deleted it, I felt its better to clarify. To all those who r upset, I'm sorry. I'm not one to show disrespect,"
It is true that Twitter has already contributed to the downfall of several popular names from the cricket world, as Lalit Modi and Kevin Pietersen. One more time, the micro-blogging site was at the centre of what could be meekly described as an improper reaction from a national cricketer. Thus, we can say that Twitteratti could lash back with their best humor in the past and this time, Raina's 'imaginary' nephew became a victim. After two famous examples of talented Indian cricketers, Raina has joined the bandwagon of his personalities and made poo-poo on himself on the famous social networking platform, Twitter.
As we expected, this cheap move backfired with people questioning about the truth behind his excuse. It is also pointed out that there was just a difference of two minutes between that strong wordy tweet and the next one which shown excitement of joining the Chennai Super Kings for the Champions League.
Suresh Raina got himself embroiled in a controversy by making tweet which followed Pakistan’s exit from the World Twenty20 tournament, all from the confines of his own home. This tweet landed him into the middle of Twitter storm alongside it shacked the whole cricket world on Twitter.
After the clarification came, Indians as well as people from Pakistan picked up on the tweet and attacked Raina for his seemingly unsporting manner. There were number of twitter hashtags began to trend from, making jokes about his nephew and discussing about the controversy. Not only former cricketers but fans also amazed at Raina's tweet, and called it a 'cheap' move.
Karsan Ghavri, former Indian cricketer told that “This kind of thing spoils the relation between the two countries (India and Pakistan). Players should never write something like this”. Other words from Ghavri, “He should be warned by the BCCI or the team management. He might have written this due to sheer frustration for not being able to qualify for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.”
There are some Fake IPL Players who tweeted using the handle @_fakeiplplayer and asking the nation that, “If Suresh Raina's thumb is his nephew, what is Virat Kohli's middle finger to him?” This blamed Raina for falsifying facts to save himself. Also, they took a dig at him and tweeted: "Now Rohit Sharma will say his nephew was batting for him all this time. #Suresh #Raina"
One of the passionate cricket fans, Shiv Sunny, said: “It is a very shallow and a cheap thing to do because you can't say Pakistan did not deserve to go into the semis. They performed better than India.”
Few were kind enough to give Raina another chance. The sports journalist Nishath Nizar blames it on the 'lack of sense of humour' among Indians. “A big deal should not be made out of it. May be the usage of words in the tweet could have been better,” In a similar tone of incredulity, Ab Rafey tweeted: “It’s a mistake. He should admit and apologise. But his ego is big”. Few others were not so kind as tweeted. “So, Suresh Raina has a scapegoat tied to his family tree,” using the handle @rameshsrivats of Ramesh Srivats.
Even in a hilarious turn of events, there were number of fake IDs cropped up that claimed themselves to be Suresh Raina’s nephews and started accepting faults and rendering apologies for world’s economic slowdown to JFK’s assassination. Like, Raina's Nephew @Raina_Nephew: Since it is time for revelations... I was responsible for the JFK bullet as well.
Some speculations were made that if ‘blaming nephew’ will become a trend in India, then Dhoni can do the same for India’s exit and Rohit Sharma for his batting performance. Read what @Ibnebattuta tweet: Meanwhile inspired by @ImRaina, Dhoni is on the lookout for a Nephew excuse for the T20 eviction. Considering this, One Mr. Zair Abbas, started promoting his blog articles on how to keep smartphones safe from nephews by using password locks.
It is assumed that Raina have taken the catchphrase from Pepsi, “Na tameez se khela jaata hai” too seriously. Many from Pakistan echoed the same sentiment and showed that good performance on field will not be enough in future for the cricketer. Ailia Zehra from Pakistan tweeted, “Dear Raina, U disrespected my country, I have lost all respect 4 you!”
Raina's nephew theory can put anyone with question mark that is it right for Raina to take more than 10 hours to realise 'smartphones are dangerous' as and when he tweeted that his nephew had posted the tweet. Raina has already embarrassed himself at least on the micro blogging site, where tweeple with their great sense of humour have laughed at him and his 'unknown' nephew. Get it clear with Krishna Yadav’s tweet: “It (nephew tweeting) could be a possibility. But, I think he is just putting the blame on his nephew as he knows he has done something wrong.”
Overall, Raina obviously did end up hurting a lot of feelings across the border which is bad in a time when India and Pakistan are still trying to mend their cricketing ties.
